Yet another speech.
Bush gave what some analysists call one of the most important speech in his presidency. With his job approval rating hovering around 40%, the hurricane aftermath, the Iraq war, high gas prices, ... it is no wonder.
Since I am too lazy to summarize the speech and give you my thoughts I will refer you to what others have to say.
John Cole summarizes it so:
Howdy folks. Bush here.
A hurricane came.
It was big.
Killed lots of people.
Our response was not what we wanted.
But we will rebuild.
Think permanent deficits.
Night.
For a bit more analysis you can turn to Billmon over at the Whiskey Bar. In fact, I think this is the one blog that everyone ought to check out on a daily basis (right after mine, of course).
Some of you may ask: What's the point of linking to other Blogs, if I draw 3 readers a day while they draw about 3 million? Well, I don't know. I guess it falls into the category that blogging on this 'level' is not so much for the reader of the blog as it is for the blogger himself.

On a different subject matter I have posted in the comments over at Kav's If you would like to address the question. He has deferred to your greater knowledge.
ebird, I am currently too busy to give any in depth answer (prepping for an interview). But I will try to post something on it later.
Just real quick: One school of thought is that elaborate plumage, mating dances, mating displays, ... are mainly a statement of "look how fit I am, I can expend all this energy on doing something completely useless and still survive" or "even with these huge ten feet feathers I can still outlast all of the predators around me".
good luck with the interview
By the way did I recall you saying that you were transitioning from PhD to post-doc?
If so congratulations on attaining your PhD.
Thanks Kav, you recall correctly. I used the strategy of just hanging out at the same place for long enough until they had to give me a Ph.D. just to get rid of me.
In any case, right now I am supposed to be reading papers to prep for tomorrow, but instead I'm checking up on the blog and watching the trainwreck of the Cowboys playing the Redskins.
